Enterprise Legal Management

Enterprise Legal Management implementation, done by people who have actually done it.

Swiftwater's legal technology practice spans the full ELM landscape: Onit, Mitratech, Wolters Kluwer, LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters, Dilitrust, and beyond. Our practitioners have implemented, migrated, and supported the platforms your legal department runs on.

The Challenge

ELM implementations fail more often than they succeed.

Scope creep, poor data migration, inadequate training, and technology that does not fit the process are the usual culprits. Most implementations are run by people who have read the manual, not people who have run the program.

The consequences are real: expensive shelfware, user resistance, failed go-lives, and a legal department that has spent 18 months and significant budget only to end up with a system nobody trusts. The problem is almost never the technology. It is the implementation team behind it.

Where most implementations break down

01

Scope defined by the vendor, not the business

02

Data migration treated as an afterthought

03

Change management bolted on, not built in

04

Integrations (HR, finance, e-signature) underestimated

05

Implementation team only knows one platform, and recommends it regardless of fit

Platform Experience

We work where you work.

Our practitioners hold implementation and migration experience across the platforms that run enterprise legal departments, not just the one we are certified to sell.

Onit Mitratech Wolters Kluwer LexisNexis Thomson Reuters Dilitrust Homegrown & legacy systems

If you are migrating from a legacy or homegrown system, consolidating platforms, or implementing for the first time, our team has done it before, on the system you are moving from and the one you are moving to. We recommend what fits your processes. Not what we are incentivised to sell.

Our Approach

Full-cycle ELM implementation.

ELM  ·  CLM  ·  Document Management  ·  Entity Management  ·  Legal Holds  ·  Information Governance

From system selection to post-live optimization.

01

System Selection & RFP

Vendor-agnostic evaluation across Onit, Mitratech, Wolters Kluwer, Thomson Reuters, and others. We recommend what fits your processes and your people.

02

Implementation & Configuration

End-to-end configuration aligned to your legal workflows. Deepest certification on Onit, with proven delivery across the major ELM platforms.

03

Data Migration

Including large-scale single-wave migrations from legacy and homegrown systems. We have delivered migrations that others would have staged across 12 months.

04

Systems Integration

HR, finance, e-signature, and middleware integrations built correctly from the start, not retrofitted after go-live.

05

BI & Dashboards

A business intelligence and analytics layer built on top of your ELM data, so your investment surfaces insight, not just reports.

06

Change Management & Training

Dedicated change management and adoption programs across all implementations. Technology that people actually use requires a change program, not a training day.

07

Go-Live & Hypercare

We stay through go-live and the hypercare period. Issues get resolved immediately, not logged in a queue for the next sprint.

08

Post-Implementation Optimization

A successful implementation is a starting point, not a finish line. We continue to tune the system as your legal function evolves.

Onit Partner Spotlight

Most implementation partners have one Level 4 certified Onit consultant. Swiftwater has three.

Onit Level 4 certification is the highest practitioner credential in the Onit ecosystem. It requires demonstrated experience across the full implementation lifecycle, not just familiarity with the platform.

Sam Lu, Jonathan Gilman, and Roger Jarman each hold Level 4 certification independently. That is not a coincidence. It is a staffing philosophy: every Swiftwater ELM engagement is led by someone who has delivered at the highest level of complexity.

Across Sam, Jonathan, and Roger alone, that is an estimated 60,000+ combined hours of Onit and legal technology implementation work. Extended further by the broader bench we have in place.

Where ELM connects to the rest of the stack

An ELM rarely stands alone. It shares data with contracts, it is where outside counsel spend becomes visible, and it sits inside a broader technology practice that decides which system owns which record.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does an ELM implementation take?+
Scope drives the timeline. A focused matter management or eBilling rollout for a mid-sized department typically runs 3 to 6 months. Enterprise programs that span matter management, eBilling, legal service requests, and integrations across multiple jurisdictions and languages run 9 to 18 months. Data migration and change management, done properly, set the pace more often than configuration does.
What is the difference between ELM and CLM?+
ELM manages the legal department's work: matters, outside counsel spend, eBilling, legal holds, and reporting. CLM manages the contract lifecycle: drafting, negotiation, approval, execution, and obligations. Many platforms offer both on one foundation, and many departments implement them together. If contracts are your primary pain, start with our CLM practice. If spend visibility and matter management are, start here.
Do you only implement Onit?+
No. Our deepest certifications are on Onit, where three of our practitioners hold Level 4 certification, and we are an Onit referral and implementation partner. Our practitioners also carry delivery experience across Mitratech, Wolters Kluwer, LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters, Dilitrust, and legacy or homegrown systems. At the selection stage we are vendor-agnostic and recommend what fits your processes.
Can you migrate us off a legacy or homegrown system?+
Yes, and this is where much of our hardest delivery experience sits. We have run large single-wave migrations from legacy and homegrown systems, including one of the largest eBilling data migrations in the industry. Migration planning starts with data quality assessment, then normalization, then staged validation against the source system before cutover.
What does an ELM implementation cost?+
Cost depends on modules, volume, and integrations. As a general frame: a single-module rollout (eBilling or matter management) for a mid-sized department starts in the low six figures including software and services; multi-module global programs run well beyond that. We scope honestly in the discovery call, including whether you need an ELM at all at your current stage.
